How do I sign up?
At this time Minnesota Energy Resources is just looking at the possibility of bringing natural gas service to the Sallie, Melissa, and Pelican Lakes communities. Once the project decision is made and if we decide to extend natural gas service to Sallie, Melissa, and Pelican Lakes area, we will begin a sign-up process for interested residents.

How much is it going to cost?
We are currently researching what this project will cost Minnesota Energy Resources and potential customers. At this time we do not have any numbers to share, but once we do have costs established we will be sharing those with the Sallie, Melissa, and Pelican Lakes communities. We understand this is important information in your decision making.

Cost to residents is dependent upon the interest level of residents along the proposed gas main. The more residents connecting, the lower the cost per resident.

A project such as this will likely result in a connection fee for residents. This is called Contribution In Aid of Construction (CIAC). Rather than residents paying for the CIAC in a lump sum upfront, Minnesota Energy Resources will work with regulatory agencies to add a monthly charge to your natural gas bill to pay for the CIAC — spreading the cost over a number of years.
  • The monthly CIAC payment is referred to as a New Area Expansion Charge.
  • If the gas line is extended, ONLY those who connect will pay a monthly new area expansion charge, whether they connect in year one or at a later time.
  • Once the monthly New Area Expansion Charge is established, it will never increase over time.
  • The monthly New Area Expansion Charge will be eliminated when the established CIAC is paid in full, but will not exceed 15 years.

Is my home (or business) in the area that you are looking to expand to?
Due to the many factors that must be researched to make our decision, we unfortunately do not know what areas will receive service at this time. We will provide more information as to which areas are being looked at in the future as that information becomes available.

How soon can I get natural gas service?
There are a lot of pieces that need to come together, so this is a difficult question to answer. If the community wants to move forward based on the economic feasibility and the regulatory agency approves the New Expansion Area monthly rate, it may be 2015 before all pieces are in place and natural gas delivery occurs. Please keep in mind this timeline is tentative and could change throughout the project cycle.

Will my yard be dug up during construction?
There will be some digging during the construction phase of this project if approved. We cannot say at this time when or where that digging will take place, but in any case we will do our best to restore any areas to their original state after work is complete.

How do I convert my furnace?
Once your natural gas service line and meter have been installed, the heating/plumbing dealer of your choice can convert your furnace and other appliances.

What do I do with my existing propane equipment and tank?
You will need to contact your propane dealer and ask about their pump-out and tank removal policy.

How can I find out more information?
We will continue to provide information to the Sallie, Melissa, and Pelican Lakes communities as it becomes available. We are looking at hosting some local meetings later this year or early next year to provide residents with additional information and to be available to answer questions.
