Prep time:

  • 2 cups dry bread crumbs (dried bread slices work well crushed)
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • Caramel or butterscotch ice cream topping


Soak bread crumbs in milk until soft.

Beat eggs until light. Add sugar, salt, nutmeg, vanilla and raisins. Mix with bread mixture.

Pour into an 8x8 greased baking pan. Set baking pan in a 9x13 pan of hot water to bake. Bake until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm with caramel or butterscotch ice cream topping.
