Tips for converting to natural gas

Switching to natural gas is easy. And the investment you make will quickly be recovered through the savings you'll see.

Tips for converting your home to natural gas:

  • Service line installation - Minnesota Energy Resources will install the service line — the line that runs between the gas main and meter. The charge is based on the length of the service line from the gas main to the meter. Contact Minnesota Energy Resources at 800-889-9508 to learn about your options.
  • Excess flow valve - Minnesota Energy Resources installs an excess flow valve (EFV) on all new residential gas service lines. This valve automatically limits the flow of natural gas if a service line is cut.
  • Selecting a contractor - To upgrade your piping and equipment, choose a qualified contractor who follows all code requirements when switching to natural gas.
  • Heating equipment estimates - We recommend getting two or three quotes for furnace conversion or possible replacement. There are rebates to install a high efficiency heating system.
